Micro suction uses a small suction device to remove wax while the clinician views the ear canal clearly. It is different from syringing because the ear is not filled with water.

If you can safely use drops, apply olive oil or EAROL twice daily for 3-5 days before your appointment. This helps soften wax and can make removal more comfortable.
Avoid using cotton buds or ear candles. If you have pain, discharge, recent ear surgery or have been told not to use drops, contact us before using anything in the ear.
Safety and suitability
Micro suction is widely used in professional ear care, but every ear is different. We check for signs such as infection, inflammation, surgical history, perforation risk or tenderness before deciding whether treatment should go ahead.

Is micro suction safer than ear syringing?
Micro suction is a dry method and does not flush water into the ear canal. It is often suitable for people who cannot have irrigation, although your clinician will always assess your ears first.
Do I need to use olive oil before my appointment?
Softening drops can make wax easier to remove. We usually recommend olive oil or EAROL twice daily for 3-5 days before your appointment, unless you have been advised not to use drops.
How long does a micro suction appointment take?
A typical appointment is around 30 minutes. This includes checking both ears, explaining the findings and removing wax where it is safe and appropriate to do so.
Can I book without a GP referral?
Yes. You can book directly with Comforts Hearing online or by phone. If your symptoms suggest infection or another medical concern, we will advise you on the next step.
What happens if the wax is too hard to remove?
If wax is very hard, deep or uncomfortable to remove, we may recommend more softening and a follow-up appointment rather than forcing the procedure.
